Floyd County is located in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Floyd County's topography is somewhat unique in that no streams or creeks flow into the county. This is because it is located atop a high plateau in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This plateau essentially separates the eastward and westward flowing streams and rivers. The population has grown by about a fourth in the past two decades to approximately 15,500 residents.

The county was named after John Floyd, the governor of Virginia when the county was formed in 1831. The recorded history of the county was initiated by 18th-century trappers, traders, and hunters. James Patton was granted 100,000 acres in the area in 1745, and the land was first surveyed in the late 1740s.

Parks And Recreation

A premier destination  for those that want to enjoy water sports, fishing, and relaxation is Claytor Lake State Park. The park covers 472-acres, and the lake surface exceeds 4500-acres. 
Avid anglers will enjoy the wide variety of fish found in Claytor Lake, including largemouth bass, catfish, walleyes, striped bass, and muskies. The swimming area is available on a seasonal basis, and it includes a diving tower. In addition to extensive camping facilities, cabins with two, three, or six bedrooms are available.
Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve is located in Floyd County because it preserves includes the summit of Buffalo Mountain, it hosts 13 rare plant species.

Attractions and Events

The Floyd Country Store returns the visitor to a bygone era. Here you'll find old-time favorites like cornbread, corn cob jelly, and pinto beans. Step up to the old-fashioned candy counter as you listen to tunes emanating from the 1940s-era juke box. It is the home of Floyd's "Friday Night Jamboree," at which both local and visiting musicians perform.

FloydFest is a music and arts Festival that has rapidly grown since its founding in 2002. The festival builds on the musical heritage that the area has been known for since the 1960s. This festival, situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, includes multiple stages that feature many kinds of music, including reggae, bluegrass, rock, and folk, among others.
FloydFest also includes local artisans displaying their creations, dance workshops, yoga lessons, storytelling, and a special tent with kids' activities. Big names that have performed here in the past include The Neville Brothers, Bruce Hornsby, Alison Krauss, and Jackson Browne.
