History

The county is named after William Branch Giles, who was elected governor of Virginia in 1827. Giles County is the home of one of only two natural freshwater lakes in Virginia. The beauty of this area was recognized early on, and the Mountain Lake Lodge was built in the mid-19th century. In the 1930s, the initial wooden lodge was replaced with a structure using stone native to the surrounding area. Interestingly, in 1987, much of the on-location filming for the movie "Dirty Dancing" was done at Mountain Lake Lodge.

Parks and Recreation

The 50-acre Mountain Lake is situated at an elevation of 3875 feet. Mountain Lake is in fact the only natural freshwater lake in the southern Appalachians. This 6000 year-old body of water was probably formed from rockslides and the resultant damming. Underground springs feed the lake and keep its temperature under 70-degrees at almost all times.  Guests of the Mountain Lake Lodge enjoy a variety of water sports and activities including canoeing, paddle boating, and fishing. Both hiking and mountain biking are also popular in the area. The facility is also at the center of a 2600-acre nature preserve. The lodge is open on a seasonal basis, from spring until fall.

In Pearlsburg there is the Whitt-Riverbend Park. This 28-acre facility is right on the New River. The many activities here include fishing, birdwatching, picnicking, hiking on a 1.1 mile loop trail, playing on the playground, and even canoe-in camping.

37-miles of the New River flow through Giles County. BASSMasters Magazine recognized the New River as one of the best smallmouth bass fishing rivers in the entire country. Also, 50-miles of the Appalachian Trail pass through Giles County. A relatively short two-mile hike can take explorers up to the spectacular Cascade Falls, a dramatic waterfall that Giles County is known for.
